Washakies breath taking win in Goulburn Cup

April 24, 2011 By Goulburn Paceway Leave a Comment

The Luke McCarthy trained Washakie produced a breath taking performance to race away with today’s $25,000 Frank and Edna Day Memorial Goulburn Cup.  Commencing quickly from the outside No 8 barrier, McCarthy surged the 7yo Badlands Hanover gelding to the front to make it a one act affair.  Leading throughout, McCarthy secured a comfortable first quarter of 31 seconds before stringing together quarters of 28.3, 28.5 and 28.1 to leave his opposition gasping for air.

Stablemate Fleur De Lil enjoyed the trial for the entire race but was no chance as Washakie careered away in the home straight to score my an expanding 10.6m margin with the Paul Fitzpatrick trained Lady Lexus running on strongly to take third.

The overall time for the event was a track record 2:41.3 which returned a fast mile rate of 1.55.9.  Washakie now moves on to next week’s Len Smith Mile at Tabcorp Park Menangle.

Fast times were the order of the day as the unbeaten Ian Wilson 2yo Scandalman outstayed Neil Day’s Magic Bliss in a track maile rate of 1:57.6 when taking out the $10,000 Andrew Lederer Memorial Goulburn Sapling Stakes.  Scandalman had settled at the rear of the field whilst Magic Operative took up the running, however Jim Douglass made a searching run to find the spot outside the leader with more than a lap to run.  Pacing the last three quarters in 29.4, 28.1 and 29.1 the two top class 2 year olds settled down to a good old fashioned slug fest with Scandalman presiding by a 1.2m margin.  The filly Dynamite Denn Nee battled on well to hand onto 3rd position beaten 14m

In the $6,000 Goulburn First National 3yo Pace, the Dennis Day trained and driven Whatifwhynot enjoyed a cosy run behind the leader Shez All Magic until the top of the home straight.  With the leader kicking, Day switched the IfIhadyourluck gelding to the outside where he quickly gained a 10m advantage.  The Neil Day trained pair of Beach Boy Adios and Trueative ran home strongly from the back of the field to secure second and third place positions.  The winner returned a track record 3yo time of 2:05.1 which returned a mile rate of 1:57.7
