THATS ART FOR HEWITT MEMORIAL

The Goulburn Paceway is gearing up for one of its most important events of the year, the Hewitt Memorial race day. The event, which is scheduled for Sunday afternoon, April 23, 2023, is a tribute to the late Tom and Angela Hewitt and supports the charitable works of the Crookwell Community Trust.

The day will feature a program of 9 races, with the $14,500 Goulburn Soldiers Club Tom & Angela Hewitt Memorial, and the $14,500 Download the TAB App Walla Walla Stakes headlining the racing.

In addition to the racing, there will be plenty of other activities for fans to enjoy.  Goulburn country and rock artist Jamie Agius will entertain throughout the afternoon, while the Crookwell Community Trust members will hold their annual raffle to raise much needed funds for their charitable works.

Racing commences at 12.07 pm with the feature, the Goulburn Soldiers Club Tom & Angela Hewitt Memorial set down as race 8 at 4.09 pm.

While not contested in 2022 due to Covid implications, trainer David Hewitt had won the 2021 edition with the very well performed Rockin Marty, and on Sunday will start Thats Art and Bosch in the capacity field of 10.

Son Brad Hewitt will take the reins behind Thats Art while Harrison Ross will continue his association with Bosch.

Thats Art is a well performed 4yo son of Modern Art and is the winner of 4 from 11 career starts.  He has drawn gate 6 in Sunday’s race and comes into it following an 8.3 metre seventh in a recent Saturday night race at Menangle.

At his previous start Thats Art contested a heat of the group 1 Riverina Championships finishing ninth behind Bettor Isolate, so he will appreciate the drop in class.

“We’re hoping he can go pretty good but he’s just not been at his best lately,” said Hewitt.  Commenting on the horse’s ability to cope with the 2240 metre distance of the Hewitt Memorial, Hewitt stated, “Thought it would suit him, but he was up in grade a fair bit, so I expect him to handle it”

Hardest for Thats Art to beat is the Scott Hewitt trained and driven Sailor Girl.  The mare has been close up in all her starts this campaign including a close second to country cups horse Mighty Joe in the Temora Cup.

Drawn in gate 1, Sailor Girl looks a great each way chance in what is a very even Hewitt Memorial field.

In the Download the TAB App Today Walla Walla Stakes the Harry Martin trained Double Encounter appeals in the 7 horse field.  A $300,000 plus earner, Double Encounter is a last start close second at Menangle behind Major Jellis in a mile event.

The aged pacer is well suited by the longer distance of the Walla Walla Stakes and looks well placed to fight out the finish.

Members and fans are invited to get trackside for what will be a very good racing meeting, and to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millsom Centre.

We also remind members of the bonuses available, including the Members Draw which recommences at $100, and the Members’ $50 All-Up.  Members must register their attendance at the track to give themselves a chance at one of the ten $50 all-up bets on the last 4 races.
