The inaugural running of the Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank and Edna Day Memorial on Thursday afternoon has drawn together a top class field of pacers including the superstar people’s horse Karloo Mick.
Trained at Dubbo by Barry Lew, Karloo Mick has been amongst the leading horses of Australasian harness racing for the past 4 years. He has amassed in excess of $1,000,000 in prize money with his major achievements being a second and third place in the Inter Dominion Pacing Championships.
Karloo Mick’s outstanding race record has seen him face the starter on 115 occasions for 50 wins, 32 seconds and 15 thirds. He has won races in all states of Australia and his presence in Goulburn’s first feature race is a great coup for the club.
Karloo Mick’s last start saw him victorious in the $40,000 Young Cup however at Goulburn on Thursday afternoon he will not have it all his own way. Standing in his way to victory is Neil Day’s outstanding 5yo Magic Operative. As a feature race winner, Magic Operative will provide stern opposition to the ageing champ and though having his first start from a spell should be the testing material.
The race has also attracted other Grand Circuit stars including the Paul Fitzpatrick trained Lonestar Legend and the Ian Wilson trained Cant Bluff Me. Both pacers have raced consistently against the top class, and along with Karloo Mick and Magic Operative are being aimed at February’s Inter Dominion Championship in Sydney.
The Frank and Edna Day Memorial is part of a huge 9 race programme and with free entry into the course, activities for children, music and good food, all are invited to come out to the Goulburn Paceway to witness history being made this Thursday afternoon
