Connections of former Tasmanian pacer Pachacuti are hopeful that a win in the $30,000 Frank & Edna Day Goulburn Cup will be enough to secure the pacer a start in the $500,000 A G Hunter Cup. The 6 year old Bettors Delight gelding last raced in the Shepparton Gold Cup on the 16 January, but was put out of contention when Messini paced roughly at the 1700 metre mark resulting in Pachacuti being checked and galloping.
“He was flattened at Shepparton so we now need a win at Goulburn to get into the Hunter Cup” said trainer and driver James Rattray. Pachacuti had strung together some fine performances at Menangle at the start of this season (September), and following a short spell had been on the improve and racing strongly prior to the Shepparton Cup mishap.
Sponsored by the Goulburn Soldiers Club, the group 3 event has drawn together a capacity field of fast class pacers, including Inter Dominion campaigner Blazin N Cullen, the Hunter Valley speedster Yayas Hot Spot, former Goulburn Cup place getter Condagen, and the classy mare Sweet Molly Oshea. With a last start second to the champion Beautide, Blazin N Cullen appeals as the hardest for Pachacuti to beat.
The Goulburn Carnival of Cups day is scheduled for Australia Day, Tuesday 26th January with race 1 set for 12.06 pm.
