The re-scheduled Hewitt Memorial race day will go ahead this coming Sunday afternoon at the Goulburn Paceway with the first race kicking off proceedings at 2.09 pm.
Originally schedule for last Sunday, the meeting was postponed due to the ongoing concerns with smoke haze and air quality that lingered in the Goulburn District.
Sunday’s Hewitt Memorial race day meeting has brought together a smaller 6 race card however benefits from larger and even more interesting fields with the two feature races boasting capacity fields.
While the Hewitt Memorial takes pride of place, the presence of champion race horse Bling It On in the $12,240 Tab Odds & Evens Walla Walla Stakes is the afternoon’s highlight.
The winner of nearly $2 million, Bling It On has won multiple Group 1 races including Victoria’s Hunter Cup and Victoria Cup. He will be having his first start since an unsuccessful trip to New Zealand for the Inter Dominion Series and after drawing gate 3 looks the winner of the Walla Walla Stakes.
In the $12,240 Goulburn Soldiers Club Hewitt Memorial, Brad Hewitt will start Ideal Breeze from gate 2. The 6 year old mare is the first emergency, but should she gain a start appeals as the hardest to beat.
Owned in part by Canberra Raiders players Jarrod Croker and Jack Wighton, along with champion jockey Tommy Berry and other Hewitt family members, the mare was impressive second behind Keep Rockin at Goulburn earlier this month.
On that occasion Ideal Breeze did all the bullocking work racing three wide and went down narrowly in a fast 1:55.4 mile rate. Over the longer distance, and from the good draw, Ideal Breeze looks the testing material should she get the run.
Hardest to beat is the Craig Cross trained and Luke McCarthy driven Culture King. A recent stable acquisition, the former South Australian pacer has an impressive record winning 11 of his 18 starts.
The David Hewitt trained Im Bruce Almighty comes out of gate 5 and seems the best of the others.
With Sunday’s race meeting doubling as a fund raiser for the Crookwell Community Trust, members and fans are asked to get involved by buying generously for the charity’s raffle that provides some excellent prizes.
Gates to the Goulburn Paceway will be open from 12 noon and the club’s committee invites all harness fans to come out and experience the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millson Centre.
