Im Bruce Almighty will tackle Sunday’s $12,240 Goulburn Soldiers Club Tom & Angela Hewitt Memorial at the Goulburn Paceway first up from a 6 month layoff.
Trained at Goulburn by Tom & Angela’s son David Hewitt, Im Bruce Almighty finished off last season with an impressive win in the $30,000 NSW Alabar Breeders Challenge 3YO Colts & Geldings final.
Recording a lifetime best mark of 1:51.3 for the mile, Im Bruce Almighty capped off a very good three year old season recording 3 wins and 7 placings from his 16 starts.
Im Bruce Almighty was brought to his top for Sunday’s race when 4th in a recent trial at Goulburn behind the Group 1 winners Rockin Marty and Ignatius. On that occasion he was running on well in a final half of 55.3 for an overall 1:54.6 mile rate when beaten 11 metres.
Im Bruce Almighty has drawn gate 4 but will come in 1 spot with the reserve drawing inside the front row. Without too much speed drawn on the front row, Im Bruce Almighty is well placed to take up the running should Hewitt desire.
“It’s a bit of an unknown going into a race like this first up but he is fairly close to the mark” said Hewitt who is looking to add a second Hewitt Memorial having previously won the race with Eclipser in 2013.
Hardest to beat may be son Sam Hewitt who trains and drives Redbank Cooper. Winner of the $30,000 Canola Cup earlier this season, Redbank Cooper is well placed to find the spot behind the leader and may prove hard to beat with a nice run.
In the $12,240 Tab Odds & Evens Walla Walla Stakes, the James Rattray trained Harjeet looks a strong candidate following a first up win at Menangle in early November. His three runs since have been solid with a last start fifth in the Group 2 $50,000 Shirley Turnbull Memorial.
The winner of 18 from 35 starts, Harjeet will be driven by James Rattray and should be able to work up to the leaders. Hardest to beat is the Dennis Picker trained Elle Yeah who will relish the 1 gate and will be fitter following her last start effort.
With Sunday’s race meeting doubling as a fund raiser for the Crookwell Community Trust, members and fans are asked to get involved with the charity’s efforts at the track where they will conduct a raffle with a number of great prizes.
Gates to the Goulburn Paceway will be open from 12 noon and the club’s committee invites all harness fans to come out and experience the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millson Centre. Enjoy quality food and a wide range of cold alcoholic and soft drinks whilst watching all the racing action in comfort.
Goulburn harness racing is brought to fans by the kind support of Tabcorp, Goulburn Soldiers Club, Hollingworth Crane Hire Service, Randwick Equine Centre, Southern Highlands Equine Centre, Sun Solutions Goulburn, Benstud, RSM Accountants, and a host of smaller businesses including Top Water Carters Crookwell, First National Real Estate Goulburn, Goulburn Livestock Transport, Landmark Southern Livestock Agenices , J A Communications, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Glen Mia ACT Saddlery, and ASPIRE Traffic Offender Course.
