Harness racing at Goulburn returns to the Paceway on Monday afternoon the 22 August. The club has drawn up an interesting 7 race program with the first scheduled to start at 1.22pm.
The Goulburn club last raced in April. Following years of drought, and then 3 floods since 2020, the club’s committee have been busy readying the track for its return.
Secretary Mark Croatto explained wind and water erosion removed on average 50mm of material off of the track surface. Significant track restoration works commenced in mid-July.
“We limped through making temporary repairs over the last year or so, but with a 4 month break and funding assistance from Harness Racing NSW, the club engaged Divalls Earthmoving & Bulk Haulage to carrying out the works which involved the delivery, spreading and shaping of some two and half thousand tonnes of crusher dust material” said Croatto.
Interruptions by continuing wet weather delayed the start, and then the project blew out to 3 weeks duration. Works were finally completed last week and the club successfully held trials on Saturday 13 August.
“Saturday’s trials went well, and while the track is still settling, and there are some minor works to complete, we’re confident Monday’s race meeting will be a pleasant surprise to visiting trainers as the track is back to the way it was when first laid down” Croatto added.
The club welcomes new sponsors including Haras Des Trotteurs, a Victorian stud standing a number of world class trotting stallions. Another is Goulburn Hay Supplies who provide the best quality hay available and a range of horse feeds.
Racing returns to Goulburn with the Haras Des Trotteurs Trotters Mobile looking an ideal race for Victorian trainer Alex Ashwood. He starts in form trotter Stevie Gee from gate 6.
The 2yo colt by French stallion Used To Me was bred by Yabby Dam Farms who trade as Haras Des Trotteurs. As a last start winner he may take some beating even if up against an older and tried field.
At his last start, Stevie Gee led from start to finish over the 2180 metre journey recording a 2:06.1 mile rate. Back to the 1710 distance, Stevie Gee can find the front and take a power of beating.
Race 2 is the Goulburn Hay Supplies Pace and the Grant Fuller trained Wheres Our Money looks well placed from gate 2.
The 4yo maiden has been racing consistently around the metropolitan tracks. Following a last 4th at Penrith he has the draw to be up and close when the field hits the finish line.
In the last of the day, the Goulburn Soldiers Club Pace, Victorian trained Matthew Craven will start Regal Reggae who has drawn gate 1.
A last start winner at Kilmore, Regal Reggae has not missed a place in her last 5 starts and comes into this race after leading throughout in a good 1:56.9 mile rate.
From gate 1 the mare looks a strong contender with the hardest to beat being Peter Rixon’s Sight To See. Brad Hewitt’s Our Lady Lara has been racing consistently as is a strong contender.
