
Field makes a straight line and is ready for a start at Goulburn Paceway
Goulburn kicks off a new season of harness racing this coming Monday afternoon (10 December). The club will hold the first of 5 meetings scheduled for the Christmas New Year period.
Allocated a total of 10 race meetings for the season, Goulburn is experimenting with 2 block periods of racing. With the first block over the December January period, the second block commences on the last Monday in April, and continues each fortnight over May and June 2019.
The season’s highlights will be the popular Hewitt Memorial Crookwell race day on Sunday the 13 January, 2019, followed a fortnight later by the Goulburn Carnival of Cups race day on the Australia Day public holiday, Monday 28th January, 2019.
The two meetings will carry combined prize money of over $170,000 and should prove a great attraction to the best horses racing in country NSW. The Frank & Edna Day Goulburn Cup will once again be carry a $30,000 prize and Group 3 status, and the club is optimistic of attracting the best fast class pacers racing at the time.
And in a new partnership, the Goulburn Club has joined with Convoy For Kids Goulburn to provide an added attraction to Carnival of Cups race day. A fleet of vintage trucks will be on display, there will be activities for children, and the country/rock music talent of Goulburn’s own Jamie Agius on show. This season’s cup day should not to be missed.
Most importantly, the Goulburn club will donate the entirety of the gate to Convoy For Kids Goulburn who do such wonderful work to support local children suffering from cancer and severe disabilities.
In respect to the Hewitt Memorial race day, the $12,000 Hewitt Memorial race has seen many good winners since it was first held 2010. The feature race will once again be supported by the $12,000 Walla Walla Stakes for the fast class pacers. The race day, which continues to grow in popularity will also play host to fund raising activities for the Crookwell Community Trust.
The well Community Trust provides aid to people of the Upper Lachlan Shire who have experienced extreme difficulties due to personal trauma and or natural disaster. The shire includes Gunning, Crookwell, Taralga, Binda, Bigga & Tuena, and each year tens of thousands of dollars are provided to those who have suffered.
Trust members will conduct a mega raffle and look forward to distributing some great prizes to the lucky winners.
And in a further development, race goers at this season’s Hewitt Memorial race day will be able to hear the singing talents of Thomas and Lachlan Bensley who perform as Short Notice.
In relation to Monday’s race fixture, harness fans are reminded it will be an afternoon affair with the first race tentatively scheduled to start at 1.24 pm.
