The Goulburn club’s Carnival of Cups race day this Sunday, the 30 April, features an excellent program of racing highlighted by the $30,600 Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank and Edna Day Goulburn Cup.
As the club’s signature race meeting of the year, the afternoon honours the late Frank and Edna Day. Raising a large family of ten, the couple have left a legacy which now extends to all three codes of the racing industry, and were instrumental in the revival of harness racing at Goulburn.
In addition to the racing, there will be plenty of activities for fans to enjoy. While the threat of wet wintery weather threatens the appearance of Ooh La La and the Mechanical Bull, the picnic contests for cash prizes, children’s face painting, the mini trotting courtesy of the Riverina Mini Trotting club and the children’s raffle for an electric car are all scheduled to continue.
Fundraising for the Goulburn Challenge Foundation will be a raffle for a new electric fridge and freezer, and a whole lamb cut and packed.
Racing gets underway at 12.40pm with the feature, the Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank and Edna Day Goulburn Cup set over the 2240 metres scheduled as race 8 at 4.45 pm.
Last contested in 2021 when won by the $1.55 favourite Alta Orlando driven by Luke McCarthy, this year’s event will once again see a McCarthy stable horse in Expensive Ego start favourite.
However, in what is a strong line up of fast class horses, it is Stingray Tara from gate position 4 that may prove the testing material.
Trained by Jack Trainer, Stingray Tara has been racing consistently at Menangle having won three starts back over the 2300 metres distance.
On that occasion Stingray Tara defeated Sunday’s rivals Fire Fox and Petes Said So and recorded a smart 1:54.2 mile rate.
At his most recent start the 7-year-old had little luck when beaten 11.9 metres behind Kingmaker over the less than suitable mile distance.
“He’s definitely not out of it, and while it is a good field, he will be suited by the distance” said trainer Jack Trainer.
On Sunday Stingray Tara will start from barrier 4 and should find a spot not far off the leaders.
Hardest to beat is the favourite Expensive Ego who is nearing the $1M in prize money earnings.
Trained by Belinda McCarthy, Expensive Ego will be driven by Luke McCarthy and comes into Sunday’s race after a 15.6 metre sixth behind Catch A Wave in the Miracle Mile.
The afternoon of racing also includes the $20,400 Download the TAB App Today 2YO Goulburn Sapling Stakes and the Haras Des Trotteurs Goulburn Trotters Cup.
While Sunday’s program looks a tough card for the locals, the David Hewitt trained Thats Art is looking to go one better in the $14,500 Hollingworth Crane Hire Services Goulburn Rose.
Last start the lightly raced pacer was an outstanding second in the Tom & Angela Hewitt Memorial behind Big Shadow for driver Robbie Morris.
“He pulled up great after last Sunday’s run; he’s going really well at the moement” Hewitt said.
To be driven by son Brad Hewitt, Thats Art came from a long way back to make up good ground while wide off the track in a fast 27.7 last quarter. Drawn in gate 4, Thats Art is likely to find a position much closer to the leaders and appeals as a strong chance to make amends.
Hardest to beat is the Jarrod Alchin trained My Ultimate Chevron who has drawn in the middle of the front line.
The 4yo gelding is a last start winner at Bathurst and hasn’t missed a place since resuming in early April after a short spell.
Members and fans are invited to get trackside for what will be a very good racing meeting, and to enjoy the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millsom Centre.
We also remind members of the bonuses available, including the Members Draw which jackpotted to $150, and the Members’ $50 All-Up. Members must register their attendance at the track to give themselves a chance at one of the ten $50 all-up bets on the last 4 races.
