Alta Orlando from the McCarthy Stable was the last Goulburn Cup winner in 2021, the stable will be looking for a repeat in 2023
Preparations are complete for the Goulburn club’s premier race meeting of the season, the Goulburn Carnival of Cups race day. Scheduled for Sunday 30 April at the Goulburn Paceway on Braidwood Road, the afternoon of harness racing is supported by entertainment for all the family.
Commemorating the late Frank and Edna Day, racing will be headlined by the Group 3 $30,000 Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank & Edna Day Goulburn Cup over the 2240 metre journey.
Frank & Edna hailed from Crookwell, with Frank a descendant of the well-known and respected Wong family. The couple wed in 1950 and moved their growing family to Goulburn during 1969.
Initially the couple established stables within the Goulburn Recreation Area, but later moved to premises in nearby Ottiwell Street, where son and leading trainer/driver Neil Day continues preparing winners to this day.
Frank and Edna’s legacy endures through their sons, daughters and many grandchildren in all three codes of the racing industry.
Sunday’s event will feature top class racing with the support including the $20,000 Goulburn 2YO Sapling Stakes, the $14,500 Goulburn Rose, the $14,500 Goulburn Trotters Cup, and a further four standard races.
As has been the tradition, the Goulburn Harness Racing Club will this year assist the Goulburn Challenge Foundation which provides important services for people with disabilities. A fund-raising activity will take place throughout the afternoon, and we encourage people to donate for this important cause.
Billed as a family fun day, there is much entertainment for all, including Goulburn’s No 1 Party Band Ooh La La who will perform throughout the afternoon. The mechanical bull will be in action as well as a jumping castle for smaller children.
Face painting, free entry into a raffle for an electric powered car for all children 5 years and younger, a display of vintage cars by the Veteran and Vintage Car Club of Goulburn, mini trotting courtesy of the Riverina Mini Trotting Club, and family picnic activities with cash prizes for adults and children are just some of the activities on offer.
