Arma The Gun and Brad Hewitt – Breeders Challenge Semi Final 2016 – Photographer Ashley Brennan

Classy pacer Arma The Gun will looking for his first win in nearly 2 years when he steps out in the final race of the day at the Goulburn Paceway Monday afternoon. The Brad Hewitt trained pacer was last in the winners circle in January 2017 when taking out a C3 – 5 pace at Menangle en-route to a Chariot of Fire start.

Monday’s Christmas Eve program has drawn together a very interesting 7 race card, and with the added attraction of country music performers ‘Country Horizon’ entertaining fans, and of course a visit from Santa Claus, an afternoon at the Goulburn Paceway is the ideal break for harness racing fans following the Christmas preparation rush.

In Monday’s race, Arma The Gun will start from gate 8 in the Goulburn Soldiers Club Pace over 1710 metres.  The handsome black 6 year old gelding has performed strongly in 2 runs since an injury enforced spell and he appeals as one of the better bets of the afternoon.

A contestant in the $200,000 Group 1 Chariots of Fire pace at Menangle in 2017, Arma The Gun was beaten a mere 14.8 metres by the champion New Zealander Lazarus who recorded a 1:49.0 mile.  On his return to racing at Young last month, the gelding made all the pace when finishing a strong third behind the highly promising Mackeral which set a new track record mile rate of 1:57.0 for the 2100.

Following that effort, Arma The Gun contested an M0 pace over 2300 metres at Menangle last week.  Making a long sustained run from the back of the field he finished a solid second to The Pacman in a fast 1:55.5 mile rate.

While drawn wide in Monday’s race, Arma The Gun will be near peak fitness and ought to appreciate the drop in class.  Should driver Brad Hewitt desire he is more than capable of working forward to take up the running.  Hardest to beat will be stablemate Stanley Ross Robyn who performed strongly when finishing second at this track on the 10 December.

In race 2, the RSM Accountants Goulburn Pace, Exeter trainer James Rattray will start former New Zealander Gooddealehemily.  The 3 times race winner was produced at the Goulburn trials recently where she sprinted home strongly for an impressive win.

Drawn in barrier 3, the 4 year old American Ideal mare looks to have her share of ability and appeals as a strong chance.  Hardest to beat will be the Bungonia trained Major Mai.  Drawn in gate 2, Major Mai is trained by Phil Willis and will be driven by leading junior driver Chris Geary.

The afternoon of harness racing is scheduled to commence at 1.55 pm and with weather forecasts indicating another warm afternoon, the club’s committee invites all harness fans to come out and experience the wonderful air conditioned facilities of the Grace Millson Centre.  Enjoy quality food and a wide range of cold alcoholic and soft drinks whilst watching all the racing action in comfort.

Goulburn harness racing is brought to fans by the kind support of Tabcorp, Goulburn Soldiers Club, Hollingworth Crane Hire Service, Randwick Equine Centre, Southern Highlands Equine Centre, Sun Solutions Goulburn, Semco Equipment Sales, RSM Accountants, and a host of smaller businesses including Top Water Carters Crookwell, First National Real Estate Goulburn, Goulburn Livestock Transport, Landmark Southern Livestock Agenices , J A Communications, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Glen Mia ACT Saddlery and Ranvet.
