Rockin Marty and trainer David Hewitt are ready to contest the 2021 Hewitt Memorial on Sunday 10th January

The David and Brad Hewitt stable of Goulburn will go into the 2021 Hewitt Memorial day this Sunday with a strong hand.  The 8-race card to be contested at the Goulburn Paceway is set to get underway with race 1 at 1.05 pm.

Leading the way for the father and son team is the well performed Group 1 winner Rockin Marty who has drawn gate 7 in the afternoon’s feature race, the $13,770 Tom & Angela Hewitt Memorial.

A winner of the Breeders Challenge final in his 3-year-old season, Rockin Marty went on to contest the 2020 Group 1 Chariots Of Fire for 4 year old pacers at Menangle last year.

Sunday’s race will be a big drop in class, however the now 5 year old has only had the one run since a spell.  Starting an odds on favourite, Rockin Marty finished fourth behind Pirate Bay the week before Christmas at a midweek Menangle meeting.

Trainer David Hewitt is more hopeful of a forward showing following his first up effort.  “He’s got a bit of quality about him, but with only the one run we’re hoping he can win for us”.

Bred by David and Maree Hewitt, Rockin Marty is by Pet Rock out of the good mare Hava De Grace who has also produced prolific winners in Shadow Son, Sand Blaster and last season’s 2-year-old Freason who has won 2 from 4.

In a strong Hewitt Memorial field, hardest to beat is the Craig Cross trained Nearis Green and the Neil Day trained Dancing Chick.

In the $13,770 Walla Walla Stakes the Bathurst trained Fouroeight appeals as the top chance.  Possessed of a super final sprint, the Mat Rue trained and driven pacer is the sole starter of the second line and won’t have to be rushed in the early stages.

At his last start, the 8-year-old pacer finished a close up third in the Group 2 Shirley Turnbull behind Our Uncle Sam on Boxing Day night at Bathurst.   Hardest to beat is the Craig Cross trained Itz My Generation and Brad Hewitt’s The Texas Ranger.

The the 2021 Hewitt Memorial day of racing also remembers long time Crookwell trainer Aub Frost and former club supervisor Robert Allport who committed a lifetime of support to the harness racing code on the Southern Tablelands.

Gates to the Goulburn Paceway will be open from 12 noon and the club’s committee invites all harness fans to come out and experience the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millson Centre.  Enjoy quality food and a wide range of cold alcoholic and soft drinks whilst watching all the racing action in comfort.

Due to Covid the club has had to implement a number of restrictions.  Foremost is the need to sign in by scanning with your mobile telephone the club’s QR code using the Service NSW app.  To avoid delays, the club encourages all to download the Service NSW app via the Play Store or similar applications.  The club’s committee also encourages all to maintain social distancing, to regularly sanitize their hands, and to ensure that within the Grace Millsom Function Centre the total number of people at any one time does not exceed 160.

To help this, food and drinks services, including a bar will be available outside between the show office and the Grace Millsom Function Centre, and electronic betting machines will be relocated to the outside balcony.

Goulburn harness racing is brought to fans by the kind support of Tabcorp, Goulburn Soldiers Club, Hollingworth Crane Hire Service, Randwick Equine Centre, Southern Highlands Equine Centre, Sun Solutions Goulburn, Benstud, RSM Accountants, and a host of smaller businesses including Top Water Carters Crookwell, First National Real Estate Goulburn, Goulburn Livestock Transport, Landmark Southern Livestock Agenices , J A Communications, Crust Gourmet Pizza, Glen Mia ACT Saddlery, and ASPIRE Traffic Offender Course.
