The Goulburn Harness Racing club hosts a 7 race card on Monday afternoon, including the third qualifying heat of the $25,000 Canberra Cup. With the final to be conducted at the Epic track on Sunday the 7th February, the Goulburn heat has drawn together a very strong line-up of in form pacers.
Brad Hewitt and Spare Me Days will be looking to go one better following their second place finish to Condagen in Tuesday’s Australia Day running of the Goulburn Soldiers Club Frank & Edna Day Goulburn Cup. Given a perfect drive by young Brad, Spare Me Days looked the winner turning into the Goulburn straight, however was run down by cousin Dennis Picker behind Condagen.
“Just as I thought I could win I saw Condagen and Deeza (Dennis Picker) going straight past me. It would have been great to win but I was happy a couple of locals were able to finish first two in our biggest race of the year” said Hewitt.
While Monday’s race carries stakes of $6,000, Hewitt has his eyes firmly set on next Sunday’s $25,000 Canberra Cup. Spare Me Days will appreciate the big drop in class, yet he will have his work cut out with the field including some well performed pacers.
Hardest to beat is the Belinda McCarthy trained Downunder Stride who has drawn gate 2 and comes into this race following a strong third last Friday in the Golden Guitar Final at Tamworth. The winner of that race, Cyclone Kate confirmed the form by easily winning Tuesday’s Goulburn Soldiers Club Goulburn Rose.
Prior to that performance, the McCarthy runner had strung together a sequence of 3 wins, and from the good gate draw looks a leading contender.
The afternoon of racing also features the return of last season’s derby contender Mister Brazil in race 4 and El Major, the former 3 year old track record holder who looks far too strong for the opposition in race 5.
Gates to the course will be open from 12.30 pm and the club encourages all to come out for a great afternoon of competitive and interesting racing, and to experience the wonderful facilities of the Grace Millson Function Centre. Enjoy quality food and a wide range of cold alcoholic and soft drinks whilst watching all the racing action in air conditioned comfort.
